Nature’s Quiet Wisdom

Without nature, our spirits become like a decayed hole in the base of an old tree that still lives but is missing a piece of its heart.

Nature’s Quiet Wisdom is a prose poetry collection that invites readers to leave the noisy, distracting world behind and discover the beauty and peace that nature offers us. Lynn H. Wyvill finds inspiration in the hush of a snowy day, comfort in the endless ebb and flow of ocean waves, and strength in a resilient oak tree. Each poem gently takes us by the hand and lead us along nature’s path to find the wisdom residing there. No matter the season, whether on a wooded trail or in an urban backyard, nature is a soothing balm for our bodies, minds, and spirits.

“In the quiet, I hear crickets hum.

I listen to the soft ting-ting-ting of a wind chime as tree limbs dance in the breeze without disturbing a single leaf.

The day slips quietly toward dusk.

All God’s creation settles down to stillness.

Peach, pink, and gold light peeks through the curtain of low, puffy clouds.

The river smooths its wrinkled face and so do I, as all worries are washed away.”

It is reassuring to know Nature’s Quiet Wisdom is part of my Kindle library, available on my smart phone. There when a busy day doesn’t allow time to stop and smell the roses, listen to birds or watch clouds and butterflies float and dance. Waiting in a doctor’s office, to testify in court, or saying goodbye for the last time to someone you love can leave you wondering— was any of it worth it? Now you have a reminder that whatever pain and worry life contains there are moments of wonder you too have known that are good to have lived and remember.

I was so grateful to read Lynn H. Wyvill’s collection of poems while I was on my own recent journey of solitude in the desert mountains. In her book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom, the reader will discover the minutiae and the magical bonds threading the stillness that draws us to nature. The turn of her words often surprises the reader and always quiets the pulse. Playfulness abounds in sea shells seen as Mother Nature’s beach toys and in flirtations with a persistent robin—even in her similes, such as “like golden points on meringue.”

Her poem “Life in Peace” truly spoke to me, as it vividly reminded me of my favorite author’s writing, the essays of Loren Eiseley—how beauty is present in the most unexpected discoveries. My other favorite poems within are “Our Compost Pile” and “Difference of a Day,” each reflecting renewal. Ms. Wyvill’s prose poetry is filled with joy, scents that elicit memories (mine as well as the author’s), hushed introspection, delightful personification throughout, and poignant moments such as when “the sun hugged all of us.” This collection is best savored sitting leisurely in a gentle outdoor breeze—or maybe in the midst of winter when we crave to be walking outdoors through the countryside.
