My Own Writer's Retreat

February 4, 2020 Lynn H. Wyvill
Don’t Let the Words Melt Away

Don’t Let the Words Melt Away

I’m fortunate that I am able to schedule 60 to 90 minutes most days to write. But even so, it seems like that is never enough.

So, the few times a year when I’m able to get away for a few days, I immerse myself in my writing. No housekeeping, cooking, laundry or general home administration, just writing, reading and thinking.

It seems like an indulgence. But it isn’t. For me, writing is a necessity. Words spill on the page. Some are good and usable. Some aren’t. But all are necessary.  Writing all words that pop into my head helps me get to what I want to say, the way I want to say it.

I love these days with no distractions when words fly and ideas burble up like a spring of fresh water from the ground.

What did I write about on my writing break? Childhood memories, winter trees, fishing, owls and stallions.

I had so many words I couldn’t get them all on the page before my break ended. I hope they don’t disappear like snow on a sunny day.

Lynn H. Wyvill grew up in Washington DC where her favorite activity was sitting under a Japanese red maple tree, watching clouds create pictures in the sky. As a writer, she finds peace and inspiration when hiking in the woods, strolling on sandy beaches, and observing nature’s show in her backyard. Those experiences are captured in her first book, Nature’s Quiet Wisdom. Before writing books, Lynn worked as a radio/TV reporter and writer for the US Department of Agriculture and owned a consulting business that trained professionals on the creation and delivery of effective presentations. She is a lifelong learner, avid reader, small town explorer, and dedicated theater attendee who lives in beautiful Virginia with her husband.

In the quiet, I hear crickets hum. I listen to the soft ting-ting-ting of a wind chime as tiny tree limbs dance in the breeze without disturbing a single leaf.
